How to Prepare Your Child for Their First Day of School
Starting school is one of the most significant transitions in early childhood. How you handle the lead-up matters just as much as the day itself.
Start talking about it early — positively
Weeks before the first day, mention school in casual, positive ways. "You'll get to paint and play with new friends." Avoid framing it as a challenge or something to be nervous about.
Visit beforehand if possible
Familiarity reduces anxiety. A school tour — like the ones we offer at Bright Minds — lets your child see the classroom, meet a teacher, and understand that school is a safe, welcoming place.
Establish a morning routine early
In the week before school starts, practice the morning routine: wake-up time, breakfast, getting dressed. Children feel calmer when they know what to expect.
Keep goodbyes short and confident
This is the hardest part for many parents. A long, emotional goodbye signals to your child that there's something to worry about. A warm, confident "I'll see you at pickup — have a great day!" is far more reassuring.
Trust the teachers
Separation anxiety usually passes within 10–15 minutes of a parent leaving. Our teachers are experienced in helping children settle. If you're worried, you can always call — we're here.
The goal is for your child to walk through that door and feel: I belong here.
