Building Fluency, Confidence, and Self-Expression

Our Grade 1 students began their day by discussing the story of Punch, the famous monkey who adopted a doll as his mother. Inspired by the conversation, they launched their own “News Studio” project—an experience built around their interests, ideas, and curiosity.

Students stepped into the roles of reporters and presenters, choosing topics that mattered to them. Some spoke about their favorite places at school, such as the swimming pool and STEAM room, while others shared funny moments and everyday experiences. Working in pairs encouraged collaboration, while individual presentations gave each child the opportunity to express themselves confidently.

The next step was writing their news stories. Because the topics were personally meaningful, students were motivated to improve their writing and prepare for their on-camera presentations. As many of them said, “I need to be able to read what I wrote!”

Using recycled materials, students created cameras, microphones, and clapboards, transforming the classroom into a lively studio. This hands-on experience boosted their confidence, strengthened their speaking skills, and even gave them opportunities to take on leadership roles by directing and supporting their peers.

Our young learners proudly presented news reports and interviews with clear voices, growing confidence, and impressive spontaneity. The project concluded with a reflection session where students shared ideas for how they would like to improve their next broadcast.

This experience highlights the power of interest-based learning, where communication, creativity, and confidence grow naturally. It also offers a simple idea for families to try at home through a “Family News Studio,” where everyone can share stories, ideas, or talents in a fun and meaningful way.
